The evolutionary, physical, chemical and observational astronomical constraints are discussed, that can be placed on a hypothetical ring around the sun. Attention is given to Blaggs's form (1913) of the Titius-Bode law of planetary distances, as well as to the perihelion advance. The constraints on properties of the ring particles are considered, by the requirement of survival against solar irradiation. Lastly, the possible destruction of the ring by particle collisions is examined.
