High-dispersion optical spectra of the radio supernova remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8 and a low-dispersion spectrum covering the wavelength range from 4000 to 7500 A are examined in order to determine the SNR's radial velocity and investigate the faint nebula associated with the SNR. It is shown that the velocity spread of the nebular material of anomalous composition is greater than 2000 km/s, which is comparable to that of the Crab Nebula (2800 km/s), and that a surrounding halo of more normal composition has a negligible velocity spread. The interstellar absorption of the low-velocity material is estimated to be about 3.8 mag, a distance of about 7.5 kpc is obtained for the low-velocity material, and the age of the SNR is found to be 1600 yr or less. An apparent magnitude of approximately -2 at maximum is deduced for the supernova, and the origin of the low-velocity material is considered.
