The basic physical ideas underlying the Fermi acceleration of a power-law distribution function at a shock front are examined with a view to generalizing this mechanism for a wider variety of astrophysical environments. Consideration is given to sonic effects, alfvenic effects, diffusion coefficient calculation, nonlinear effects, injection, radiative losses, geometrical effects, and time dependence. It is concluded that a better understanding of the problems of injection and shock moderation is needed before the Fermi acceleration mechanism can be shown to be operating outside the solar system.
