Pc1-2 ULF waves are strongly associated with the presence of heavy ions in the magnetosphere. We investigate the role of heavy ion resonances in nonuniform plasmas near the equatorial region. By adopting the invariant imbedding method, the coupled plasma wave equations are solved in an exact manner to calculate the resonant absorption at the Buchsbaum-Bers ion-ion hybrid, the ion-ion hybrid or the Alfven resonances, respectively. Our results show that irreversible mode conversion occurs at these resonances, which absorb the fast wave energy. The ellipticity of these resonances is found to be small, which indicates that the resonant absorption results in the linearly polarized resonances. Owing to the fact that the multi-ion hybrid resonances in cold plasmas are determined by simple parameters such as the fraction of the ion number density of each species as well as the magnetic field and the electron number density, it is suggested that we can directly obtain the ion composition ratios from the interpretation of these heavy ion resonances just by either electric field or magnetic field data. To testify our theoretical suggestion, numerical experiments are also performed in a three-dimensional multi-fluid model, which is based on the same physical profiles used in the theoretical modeling. We found that both analytical and numerical results are consistent with each other, which implies that the same technique can be used in observations to monitor the cold ion composition ratio.
