The spectrum of HD 51480 shows three components. Broad He I lines are interpreted as arising in the photosphere of a rotating, early B star, surrounded by a line-emitting region and a rising shell, where absorption lines corresponding to an early A type are formed. The shell is apparently variable in density, temperature, and rise velocity. Distance estimates lead to the conclusion that HD 51480 is probably a member of the young CMa OB1 association.
