we have measured the thermal conductivity of two molten silicates using the transient hot-wire method developed by Nieto de Castro et al. (1976) and adapted for high temperature measurement by Snyder et al. (1994). The results for Na2SiO3 and CaNa4Si3O9 show the same strong temperature dependence as shown for CaMgSi2O6, with activation energies whose magnitudes are similar to those for viscous flow. As the effect of composition is comparable to that of temperature, we suggest that to model cooling of magmas, values of λ between 0.05 and 0.3 (W/mK) should be used.
