The grand-design spiral/starburst galaxy M83 has been the site of six supernovae in the last century. By extrapolation, the galaxy contains about 180 SNRs with ages of less than 3000 years. Using a combination of narrow- and broad-band images of M83 obtained with Magellan/IMACS, we have identified a large number of new supernova remnants (SNRs), many of them at or below our resolution limit of 0.4 arcsec. At the 4.5 Mpc distance of M83, objects larger than about 15 pc are resolved. In our earlier study of M83, we had previously found 71 SNRs in M83, based on the standard technique of identifying nebulae with elevated [S II]:Hα ratios (when compared to H II regions) as SNRs. We have found at least 100 new SNRs of this type. In addition, we have located at least 10 emission nebulae with very high [O III]:Hα ratios compared to either planetary nebula or ISM-dominated SNRs, 6 of which are coincident with Chandra X-ray sources. Many of these may well be very young SNRs radiating primarily from shocks propagating into SN ejecta, or possibly into metal-enriched circumstellar gas. These would be analogues in M83of objects like Cas A in the Galaxy or the O-rich SNR N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud. In addition to describing the observations and our identification of a new sample SNRs, we discuss 5he distribution of SNRs across the face of M83 and the extent to which the SNR distribution traces massive star formation in the galaxy.
