Sys-Rem, a statistical algorithm based on the PCA method, is a way to reveal and remove low-frequency variations of external origin ("systematic errors,” "red noise") from light curves (Tamuz et al. 2005; Mazeh et al. 2006). Sys-Rem has been conceived and used mainly for the search for new variable objects, including new transiting exoplanets. Here we investigate the possibility to modify this technique into an alternative to regular differential photometry for the cases where the variable object to be studied ("the target") is known. We utilize the capability of Sys-Rem to take into account the differences in colors and positions of comparison stars without prior knowledge of these differences. This gives Sys-Rem an advantage in precision, as compared with regular differential photometry, which ignores the differences in colors and positions of the stars. The major obstacle for the application of Sys-Rem to our purpose is the unpredictable influence of the (unknown) variability of the target on the results. We show that our goal can be achieved for variable objects whose light curves have portions free of variations or whose variability pattern can be approximated by a simple model. An important class of such variables is stars with transiting planets. This project was supported by NSF grant AST-0851892 and the Maria Mitchell Association.
