Comets: Individual: 51P/Harrington

Scientific paper

Using 208 astrometric observations of the comet from the interval 1953--1995 we elaborated two numerical models for the nongravitational motion of the rotating and precessing cometary nucleus. We took into account the precessional motion of the spin-axis of the comet's nucleus in two ways: either as simple linear changes of two angles describing the position of the rotation axis in space or as the complicated changes of those angles caused by the forced precession. Both models represent all the observations with the mean RMS residual equal to 1 arcs. Changes of angles for the nucleus spin-axis orientation are presented graphically. Orbital elements for the eight perihelion passages of the comet during 1953--2001 are given in a table.
