Over two years before the launch of Kepler, a 1.25 sq. degree 40-night long photometric survey was performed. The imaging survey looked at the center of the Kepler field of view being centered on the open star cluster NGC 6811. The survey was performed using the Case Western Schmidt telescope located at Kitt Peak National Observatory. It occurred from 1 September 2006 to 10 October 2006 of which about 15 nights were lost or affected by weather. Survey observations stared at the same field each night using 3 minute r-band observations. Occasional V band frames were taken to allow us to tie the survey magnitudes to the KIC data.
Light curves were produced for over 30000 r=14-19 point sources in the survey field and searched for exo-planet transits. Ten initial candidates were identified but reduced to three after follow-up observations. The three remaining candidates were placed on the Kepler target list and based on the Kepler light curves, we will discuss the results. Kepler was selected as the 10th mission of the Discovery Program. Funding for this mission is provided by NASA, Science Mission Directorate.
