Ground-based observations of R64were performed with a new high-resolution CCD imaging camera at the Danish 1.54-m telescope at ESO, La Silla. Richardson-Lucy image restoration technique with noise suppression using the wavelet transform, and a new fixed pattern removal technique was applied to obtain images with high angular resolution. R64was found to be a young compact cluster consisting of at least 37 stars within a field of 15"x10". V,I photometry covering a range of 5 magnitudes is presented as well as the first color-magnitude diagram for R64. From our V measurements we estimate a lower limit for the total mass of R64of 320Msun_.
