X Her is an oxygen-rich semi-regular variable star that is undergoing significant mass-loss. It is also one of a growing number of evolved stars whose circumstellar envelopes have recently been detected in the HI 21-cm line. Here we present Very Large Array HI imaging of X Her in combination with HI mapping of a 2-degree region around the star obtained with the Green Bank Telescope. We find a compact HI emission component associated with X Her, including a tail of material extending ˜0.2 pc opposite the direction of the star's motion through the interstellar medium. In addition, our mapping observations reveal that X Her appears to lies on the periphery of a much larger and more massive HI cloud whose properties are similar to those of compact high-velocity clouds. Such an association is unexpected within the context of current models for the origin of high-velocity clouds. We will discuss possible implications of this enigmatic association as well as the role of environment in shaping the mass-loss history of X Her.
