We present results of a search for the counterparts to faint Galactic Center X-ray sources using near-IR data from ISAAC on the VLT. We show that the astrometric cross-correlation of our ISAAC imaging with the revised catalog of X-ray source positions from Muno et al. (2003) and Muno et al. (2006) results in a statistically significant excess in the number of candidate IR counterparts to the 130 X-ray sources encompassed within our IR imaging fields. We find a small over-abundance of more local (relatively unextinguished) bright, blue candidate counterparts to the X-ray sources as compared to the total IR field population. It is likely that this fraction of the population is dominated by local, massive X-ray active stars. We obtained K-band spectroscopy of candidate counterparts to 21 of the X-ray sources, but did not detect Brackett-gamma emission (a known accretion signature) in any of the spectra. We conclude with a brief discussion about the likely nation of this X-ray source population and a description of the next observational phase of the project. This work is based on observations made with the ESO VLT under imaging program 071.D-0377(A) and spectroscopic program 075.D-0361(A).
