The characteristics of small-scale, wavelike patterns, known as ripples, which occur near the mesopause have been observed during a one year period in 2004 from Maui, Hawaii (20.70 N, 156.30 W). Measurements were obtained using the Utah State University (USU) Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (MTM), which is a high performance imaging system that measures intensity and temperature structure in the OH and O2 nightglow emission layers centered at ~ 87 km and ~ 94 km respectively. Large numbers of spatially localized ripple events were observed simultaneously in the OH and O2 airglow images exhibiting horizontal wavelengths less than ~ 15 km and lifetimes of ~ 10-30 min. In this paper we investigate 20 such ripple events observed in May, 2004 together with background wind measurements using a co-located meteor radar to study their alignment and association with local wind shear as expected for dynamical instabilities.
