X-ray Occultation Sounding (XOS) measures total atmospheric density in the lower thermosphere and mesopause region (70-150 km) using the 2-45 keV bandpass. As bright celestial X-ray sources are occulted by the Earth's atmosphere, absorption arising from inner-shell photoionization provides density information which is independent the chemistry, ionization, and thermal states of atmospheric gases. We compare recent XOS density retrievals, using different bandpasses, obtained by the Pulse Counter Array (PCA) aboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite to the NRLMSISE-00 empirical climatological atmospheric model and measurements obtained by the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) experiment. This comparison shows that XOS and SABER density retrievals approximately agree, but differ significantly from the MSIS climatological prediction at some altitudes. We also consider how dynamical and space weather effects might account for deviations of measured densities from climatological predictions.
