Most of what is known about gamma-ray burst host galaxies is based on surveys skewed towards optically bright bursts - potentially excluding the significant population of dark GRBs, many of which are thought to be highly extinguished by dust in their hosts. The location and nature of this dust is not yet clear. In this work, we present optical and near-infrared photometry of the host galaxies for a sample of extremely dark Swift-era gamma-ray bursts. While its overall properties are diverse, the sample includes several extremely reddened hosts and exhibits a median color significantly redder than that inferred from the hosts of optically-selected GRBs. We conclude that in at least some cases, the inferred dust is distributed throughout the host. The host galaxies of GRBs are likely to be significantly more diverse than previously realized.
