The existence of dark matter halos surrounding large, bright field galaxies is well established. However, the structure of these halos remains poorly constrained, as does the relationship between the halos and the luminous galaxies that they surround. In the case of relatively isolated host galaxies, satellite galaxies can be used to probe the dark matter halos of the hosts. The satellites tend to be found preferentially nearby the major axes of their hosts; i.e., the satellite distribution suggests that the halos are flattened. Here we show that in a LCDM universe the locations of the satellites can be used as a direct tracer of the dark matter halos; i.e., satellites more or less trace the halo shapes. Furthermore by comparing the observed distribution of satellite galaxies with how they are distributed in a LCDM universe we are not just finding out whether halos around isolated hosts are flattened - this is also a direct observational test of the LCDM model on galactic scales. In particular, the observed anisotropic distribution of satellites around relatively isolated host galaxies conforms to the expectations in a LCDM universe. Here we show that by observing a cosmologically-sized LCDM simulation in the exactly the same manner as an extensive redshift survey, the observed trend is replicated by the LCDM model: the satellites around red, massive hosts with low star formation rates are distributed much more anisotropically than are the satellites of blue, low mass hosts that are actively forming stars.
