Hα nebular emission is one of the most direct tracers of star formation and much of our understanding of star formation in the local Universe is based on observations of the Hα line. We use narrow band infrared imaging from the NEWFIRM Hα Survey to extend such studies to the intermediate redshift Universe - an important period in galaxy evolution, where the overall star formation rate reaches its peak. A critical component of our work is to obtain optical spectra for the emission line candidates. We report on the first results from deep IMACS follow-up spectroscopy of Hα emitters at z=0.8. We confirm the redshifts of 300 emission line candidates and examine the magnitude of the dust attentuation using Balmer line ratios. These attenuations are compared to other widely used methods of estimating the effects of dust in both low and high redshift galaxies. We also compare directly the star formation rates derived from multiple tracers ([OII]3727, Hα, UV) over a wide range of mass and metalicity. Finally, we discuss our plans to extend this work to z=2.2.
