I will present the results of my PhD thesis research, exploring the ISM environments of long-duration gamma-ray burst (LGRB) host galaxies. I have conducted the first uniform, rest-frame optical spectroscopic survey of LGRB hosts out to a redshift of z 1, and have used this data to determine a variety of ISM properties for these environments, including metallicity, star formation rate, and the age of the young stellar population. These results show that LGRBs generally occur in low-metallicity galaxies. By comparing these LGRB hosts to a variety of local and intermediate- redshift galaxy samples, I find that the ISM environments of LGRB hosts are significantly different from the general galaxy population and the host galaxies of nearby broad-lined Type Ic supernovae. However, LGRB hosts show better agreement with a sample of nearby metal-poor galaxies. I have also generate a new suite of stellar population synthesis and photoionization models, specifically tailored to accommodate low-metallicity galaxies; these models can be used to further investigate the star formation histories and stellar populations of LGRB host galaxies. Using these models and comparisons with nearby galaxy populations, I consider the implications for LGRB progenitor models and their potential utility as tracers of star formation in distant galaxies.
