A short (30 ks) Chandra observation of the luminous (Lbol 1047 erg/sec) z=1 CSS radio quasar 3C186 showed that it lies in the center of a relatively massive (kTx 5 keV) X-ray cluster. We report on our observational campaign since this discovery, with new results from deep Chandra, VLA, and Gemini observations.
Our 200 ks Chandra X-ray image constitutes the deepest X-ray observation of a z>1 cluster to date, and reveals a cool-core cluster with diffuse X-ray emission extending out to 40 arcsec (320 kpc) from the quasar.
This research is funded in part by NASA contract NAS8-39073 and Chandra grant G08-9125A-R.
