We have identified several young stars located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a nearby dwarf galaxy, that have spectral signatures of proto-planetary disks. Infrared
spectra taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope reveal strong
emission that indicates the presence of silicate dust, molecular and
atomic gas, and hydrocarbon molecules orbiting close to the stars. Visible light spectra indicate that some of the orbiting gas is either accreting onto the stars or is being ejected in magneto-hydrodynamic winds. Since the SMC is chemically metal-poor relative to the Milky Way galaxy, these observations offer an opportunity to study the earliest stages in the formation of planetary systems around individual stars that formed in environments chemically similar to galaxies in the early universe. We present preliminary findings in this study.
