Two sets of narrow absorption components of Na I D1 and D2 were detected in the spectra of RS Oph in the early stages of the 2006 explosion. The deeper components, whose radial velocities were about +6 km s^{-1} in the frame of the local standard of rest, obviously belonged to interstellar matter. On the other hand, the weaker components were blue-shifted by about 33 km s^{-1} with respect to the RS Oph system. The latter components may have belonged to the circumstellar envelope formed by the mass outflow from the red giant in the system. The column densities of sodium and hydrogen atoms and the extinctions are estimated for the interstellar and circumstellar components. The mass-loss rate from the red giant is estimated to be of order 10^{-6} M_{sun} year^{-1}, and the mass of the circumstellar envelope may have been of order 10^{-5} M_{sun}. The mass of the ejecta may have been roughly 20% of that of the envelope.
