In § 3.6 the equation for ζ(z), the cosmological mean metallicity in solar units, is in error because we did not divide by the mass of the oxygen atom in atomic mass units. The correct equation is ζ(z)=(MtotMO)solar(OOVI)ΩOVI(z)Ωb,where (Mtot/MO)solar=(μ/16)(H/ O)solar=95.5. This correction reduces the limits on the mean oxygen metallicity by a factor of 16: ζO(z=0.9)>=4.0+/-1.2×10-4h(q0=0),5.8+/-1.7×10-4h(q0=0.5).The limits on the carbon metallicity should be reduced a factor of 12 to give ζC(z=0.9)>=2.3+/-0.6×10-4h(q0=0),3.3+/-0.8×10-4h(q0=0.5).Two numerical values in the abstract change to the following: ``Since O>OVI, if the mean cosmic metallicity Z were below 2.8×10-4 solar, then the accompanying hydrogen and helium would account for all baryons in the universe. We conclude that logZ(z=0.9)/Zsolar>=-3.6 and much greater if O VI is not the dominant ion of oxygen.'' We are extremely grateful to Jerry Wasserberg and Todd Tripp for pointing out this error.
