The relativistic pickup process in active galactic nuclei is investigated with respect to the influence of interstellar neutral atoms under the assumption of a jet plasma consisting of thermally distributed electrons and ions. The ionization length of neutral hydrogen due to charge exchange is much longer than the ionization length from electron-impact ionization. Therefore, the electron-impact ionization is the dominating ionization process also for hadronic jets to generate relativistic pickup ions. Moreover, it is shown that the ionization length for electron impact is 3 orders of magnitude smaller than calculated before.
