We are studying the properties and Galactic distribution of both Massive Young Stellar Objects and (ultra)compact HII regions as part of the Red MSX Source Survey. Our eventual goal is to fully characterise the young massive star population in the galaxy. A crucial element in this task is to derive accurate distances, without which we cannot derive sources luminosities with any degree of accuracy. We have been using kinematic distances for this task. However within the solar circle there exists a distance ambiguity which we have been attempting to resolve using the existing HI Galactic Plane surveys. This appears to work well for bright sources, but we have not been able to quantify how reliable it is as a method nor to use those techniques to solve for the distances to fainter HII regions because of the beam dilution present in the large beam surveys. The aim here is to acquire high spatial resolution HI data to solve both of these issues.
