The H2O southern galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) is not just a survey for water masers. It is an unbiased survey to be undertaken with the Mopra radiotelescope which will cover 27 lines between 19.5 and 27.5GHz, including water masers, class I and II methanol masers, thermal methanol, ammonia (both thermal and masing), HCCCN and radio recombination lines. Such a survey will complement others in the infrared (eg. Spitzer) and sub-mm (eg. APEX), as well as the CO survey conducted by NANTEN. The results of HOPS will give us a better understanding of the relationship between different maser species, as well as a more complete picture of star formation throughout the southern Galaxy.
