Scientific paper

We propose to observe the two groups of galaxies NGC 5044 and NGC 5813 each with 130 ks exposure time. We will combine these data with archival data of three other groups. The RGS spectra will reveal accurate abundances of nitrogen and carbon, key elements produced both by massive stars and intermediate mass AGB stars. The EPIC spectra will give accurate abundances of all elements heavier than oxygen. The combined spectra allow us to measure the contributions to the metal enrichment by each of the individual categories: intermediate and low mass stars, core collapse supernovae and type Ia supernovae. In addition, we will measure the spatial distribution of these elements.
