Results from Viking-1 and Viking-2 experiments on detection of Martian biotic processes and composition of the Martian atmosphere and soil are reported, along with other Viking data and a survey of the Viking mission operations. The labeled release (LR), pyrolytic release (PR), and gas exchange (GEX) experiments and their confounding results and conflicting interpretations are discussed, and evidence of H2O-ice fog patches, torrential floods perhaps a billion years ago, major climatic changes over some long period (and only slow climatic processes in the present epoch), and atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen sufficient to support microbiota (and comprising perhaps vestiges of once abundant quantities in the remote past), are reported. Striking tectonic features (Olympus Mons dwarfing the earth's tallest peaks, Valles Marineris dwarfing the earth's largest continental and ocean-bottom rifts and valleys) are described. Illustrations (color, B/W, one false-color, all glossy) are profuse.
