We are producing a database of all impact craters 3-km-diameter and larger on Ganymede. The primary data sources for this analysis are Galileo SSI and NIMS data, complimented by Voyager data where Galileo data are unavailable. The database includes the following information on each crater: latitude and longitude of crater center, crater diameter, geologic unit, crater classification (simple, complex, multiring, penepalimpsest, or palimpsest), interior morphology, ejecta morphology, pedestal ejecta morphometric characteristics (if applicable), and crater preservational state. All crater information will be ingested into the ArcGIS Geographic Information System to analyze the influence of different environmental factors on the production of specific crater features. The analysis also will include a comparison between central pit and pedestal ejecta craters on Ganymede with analogous features on Mars to determine what role near-surface ice may play in the production of the Martian features. Upon completion, the Ganymede crater database will be available to the planetary community through the USGS Planetary Interactive GIS on the Web Analyzable Database (PIGWAD) system.
