Proto-planetary nebulae (PPN) represent the last missing link in stellar
evolution. As the result of the IRAS sky survey, many PPN candidates
have now been identified. In this review, we summarize the observed
properties of PPN and the role PPN play in our understanding of chemical
synthesis and the shaping of planetary nebulae.
