Precambrian zircons analyzed by isotopic dilution and dated by the U-Pb method have been studied by infrared absorption spectrometry in the vibrational band of 615 cm-1 which has proved to be particularly convenient for measuring the degree of metamictization of the zircons. The study shows that the duration of the structural damage of the zircon (and thus the age of its formation or recrystallization) may be deduced from the degree of metamictization, measured by infrared absorption spectrometry, and from the amount in radioactive elements (U + Th), measured by isotopic dilution. Several examples are furnished, dealing with the application of the infrared method to Precambrian polycyclic provinces (Zaïre, Brazil); the infrared results are compared with the geochronological U-Pb data on zircons and sphenes and Rb-Sr data on whole rocks and minerals. Des zircons précambriens analysés par dilution isotopique et datés par la méthode U-Pb ont été étudiés par spectrométrie infrarouge d'absorption dans une bande vibrationnelle (615 cm-1) qui s'est avérée particulièrement appropriée à la mesure du degré d'état métamicte des zircons. L'étude montre que la durée du dommage subi par la structure d'un zircon (et donc l'âge de sa formation ou de sa recristallisation) peut être déduite de son degré d'état métamicte, mesuré par spectrométrie d'absorption infrarouge, et de sa teneur en éléments radioactifs (U + Th), mesurée par dilution isotopique. Plusieurs exemples d'application de la méthode à des domaines polycycliques précambriens (Zaïre, Brésil) sont fournis; les résultats infrarouges sont comparés aux données géochronologiques obtenues par la méthode U-Pb sur zircons et sur sphènes et par la méthode Rb-Sr sur roches totales et sur minéraux.
