Kepler characterized certain anomalies in the motions of the Moon, Earth, and the Sun as small, manifold, having an impenetrable cause, and resulting from his introduction of physical causes into astronomy. Horrocks felt that what appeared to be chance inequalities in those motions did not really exist, or would be able to be reduced to rule eventually. His successes in reducing some of the planetary and lunar inequalities to rule, led him to the position that there was nothing in the nature of things to bar the discovery of regularities in what now seem to be inequalities not reducible to rule.
