The characteristic cross-sectional size near the earth of interplanetary shock waves emanating from powerful solar flares is estimated on the basis of evidence relating to the occurrence of geomagnetic disturbances. It is shown that this cross section may be described as an ellipse with axes of approximately 4 x 10 to the 12th cm and 10 to the 13th cm.
