Spectroscopy confirms that the optical filaments found by van den Bergh within the nonthermal radio source MSH 15-56 belong to the supernova remnant. The spectral characteristics are typical of other shell-type galactic SNR and indicate a diameter of 30 to 40 pc, consistent with the estimated radio distance of 3.2 kpc. A lower limit to the visual absorption is found to be Aυ = 5.1 magnitudes. The data do not allow any conclusion about the peculiarity of this source, as seen in radio, but support the morphological similarity with other objects like HB3, HB9, or VRO 42.05.01.
