We have computed self- consistent models for spherical accretion on to a degenerate dwarf when the infalling gas is optically thick to Compton scattering. We find that photoelectric absorption by the heavy elements has an important effect on the emergent X-ray spectrum. This indicates that the compact object in Cygnus X-2 is most unlikely to be a degenerate dwarf.
