The present work examines theoretically the heating and subsequent cooling of a flare region as a flux of electrons with energies greater than 10 eV falls from the corona into the chromosphere in the course of 100 sec. Gas temperature, density, ionization, and velocity distributions are calculated for three energy flux values. A temperature jump due mainly to thermal conductivity propagates through the gas. A shock wave propagates ahead of the temperature jump, heating and compressing the gas. The results of the calculations explain the principal features of the active phase of flares. Brightening of H-alpha is connected with both heating of the gas by particles and by thermal conductivity and with the effects of the shock wave.
