The effect on the cosmic density of the possibility that galaxian mass varies as a power of luminosity is examined. The smaller the exponent, the greater the mean density. It is possible to close the universe if the brighter galaxies have a mass-luminosity ratio of 250 (Hubble constant 100 km per sec per Mpc) and mass varies as the one-fourth power of luminosity.
