A new means of determining the polarity of sunspots is outlined. The method employs a quarter-wave phase shifter and a polarized filter in front of the entry slit of the helioscope. The mode of operation of the apparatus is explained and illustrated with examples. Relations to the Zeeman effect are discussed, and the radiation suppression obtained with the equipment is diagrammed.
