We will use OSCIR to observe a sample of 20 Southern Hemisphere Vega- type stars. A determination of the composition and structure of Vega- type dust disks has wide-ranging implications in many areas of current research (e.g. star and planet formation). An investigation of a significant number of these systems is important since we will start placing limits on how many of these stars have disks, and if there is any evidence for companions in those disks. Specifically, once the basic characteristics of this type of disk are known, we can start to answer the crucial question of how these disks relate to our own Solar System, and to planetary systems in general. The proposed mid-IR imaging will allow us to trace the distribution of warm dust in these systems, and gives us the opportunity to investigate the temperature and optical depth of the dust. The research proposed here compliments observations made at CTIO in Sept. 1998 and represents the first mid-IR imaging of these Southern Hemisphere Vega-type stars which are only available in the Spring. We request a total of 3 nights to complete this unique program.
