A physical model of a tangential discontinuity colliding with a bow shock is developed. The theory of the interaction of a plane tangential discontinuity with a plane fast shock is presented. The results of the theory are then applied to the bow-shock interaction problem, and quantitative results are given for the interaction of an interplanetary tangential discontinuity with the earth's bow shock.
