Recent K-band surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) studies of Virgo cluster elliptical NGC 4489 have concluded that this galaxy may contain a heretofore undetected bolometrically bright stellar population. Unfortunately, the published NGC 4489 K-band SBF data is hampered by low signal-to-noise ratio and a poor globular cluster luminosity function determination, making it possible that the bright K-band SBF signal was a false detection. We propose to re-measure the K-band SBF magnitudes of a small sample of ellipticals including NGC 4489 with ONIS on the 2.1m to confirm or reject the conclusion that NGC 4489 contains a bolometrically bright stellar component. The results of this experiment address two issues: (1) the accuracy of K-band SBF distance determinations for randomly selected cluster ellipticals; and (2) the use of I-band and K-band SBF measurements as a probe of the recent star formation history of ellipticals galaxies.
