We propose to use the CRSP/SALLY IR spectrometer at the KPNO 2.1 m telescope during the April/May 1999 Mars opposition, as part of a coordinated observing campaign using instruments at two other sites. The primary goal is to provide multi-spectral, spatial context information for Mars Global Surveyor, which begins its circular-orbit mapping mission during Spring '99. CRSP will acquire a spectral image cube of Mars at accessible wavelengths between 2.9 and 5.1 microns, and at spectral resolving powers (R) from 690 to 2860. Specific objectives of this proposal are to (1) produce spectral maps of the 3 micron water of hydration feature, (2) map CO2 and H2O ice clouds and surface frost and (3) extend the mapping of the previously observed 4.5 micron feature, attributed to sulfates.
