We request five short Hydra observations of an ensemble of RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster M 3. From spectra of the Mg II triplet we will determine the mean radial velocity of the ensemble of variables, and compare it to the mean radial velocity of giant stars in the cluster. These observations should allow us to resolve the issue of the reliability of the Mg II lines for velocities in Baade-Wesselink analyses. This problem can now be definitively solved after 35 years of speculation.
