I wish to obtain wide-field R-band images of a sample of 50-60 interacting spiral galaxies selected from a complete sample of galaxies with a close companion as well as a subset of the Arp atlas of interacting galaxies in order to study the near- and large-scale environments of this population. The presumption is that interacting (binary) galaxies have richer large-scale environments than field galaxies. But is this so? The same claim was made for Seyfert galaxies and it appears not to be the case. Either way, these data will provide valuable information on the evolution of galaxies in the local universe, especially starburst and active galactic nuclei, and will be compared with similar data taken for Seyfert galaxies and a control sample of non- active systems already acquired. The analysis will employ a variety of quantitative techniques.
