I will discuss the expected properties of the observed UHECR spectrum resulting from simulations of intergalactic propagation, particularly in the hypothesis that the sources are bursting (such as Gamma-Ray Bursts) rather than continuous ones. I will then consider more generally the characteristics of particle acceleration in relativistic fireballs, and in particular the maximum particle energy attainable. Finally, I will present a possible scenario for UHECR production in neutron star binary merger events, if these lead to relativistic fireballs in pulsar wind bubbles.
