A simple model for the evolution of a galaxy is developed which makes it possible to follow the time variation of such descriptive parameters as star composition, luminosity, and heavy-element abundance. The model takes into account the exchange of matter between the stellar and gaseous components of a galaxy. Calculations are presented which show that the main parameter governing the rate of evolution of a galaxy is the minimum mass of the stars that form. The best fit for the parameters observed in the Galaxy is obtained for a minimum mass of about 0.2 solar mass.
