The TEV gamma-ray data obtained by CAT and HEGRA on the AGN Mkn 501 are used to constrain the infra-red background density around 10 microns. Recent measurements of this near- and far-IR background allow to fix the IR density at high and low energy and to let free only the range 3.5-100 microns, which is essentially unexplored. Conservative hypotheses on the intrinsic shape of the Mkn 501 spectrum lead to un upper limit of 4.7 nW/m2/sr between 5 and 15 microns. This result is rather unsensitive to the precise IR density bellow 3.5 microns or above 100 microns. A purely extra-galactic origin of the background at 60 microns is also excluded.
