The Einstein Observatory has detected X-ray sources 1000 times fainter than any previously observed and 100-million times fainter than the first X-ray star observed. This paper notes that X-ray observations will cause the mainstream of astronomy to move in new and unexpected directions. Some of the results that may require a change of course in certain areas of astronomical research are outlined; these results pertain to stellar heating, massive stars and neutron stars, galactic cluster studies, and background radiation.
