We propose to survey nearly 300 candidate association members in the vicinity of the Rho Oph dark cloud in order to constrain the very low mass end of the emergent mass distribution in this extremely young embedded cluster. This target sample is comprised of H(alpha) emission- line sources identified from our deep imaging survey as well as brown dwarf candidates identified in previous work. Medium resolution spectra obtained with HYDRA from 5800-8500 Å will enable us to; i) confirm H(alpha) emission in our candidate young stellar objects; and ii) estimate spectral types (and thus photospheric temperatures) crucial for placing these objects in the H-R diagram. By comparing results from this study with on-going work in other young clusters we can answer the question: is the IMF universal or does it depend sensitively on the ``initial condition'' in the parent star-forming molecular cloud core.
