After an introduction on the different evolutionnary stages of the young low-mass stars, from protostars to T Tauri stars, I will present the activity in X-rays of these young stellar objects. I will illustrate this presentation with Chandra observations of star-forming regions, as well as the very first results of XMM-Newton on the rho Ophiuchi dark cloud.
